My Review

A fun, action-packed, beautifully illustrated graphic novel that can be read entirely in a single sitting!

James Crowley, our resurrected protagonist, is wandering through the lawless Wild West, solving mysteries and weeding out supernatural evil while serving the White Throne. In the first volume of this saga, we see him tackle the mystery around a strange disappearance and grave-robbing in the quaint, lawless town of Dead Acre. The search quickly spirals into more chaotic altercations and a confrontation with unexpected supernatural fiends.

“This isn’t your everyday town. When things happen here, we let them—or they get worse.”

Crowley’s journey is not easy, as he lives a life of undead servitude with an arrangement that is shrouded in mystery. But, as the “Hand of God” who is armed to the teeth and can’t feel pain, he isn’t an easy target for his enemies either.

“Everywhere I went, people mistook me for the law”

I loved the illustrations and almost every page is packed with guns blazing action, which are all beautifully depicted. The style of presentation does justice to the gut-wrenching combat scenes and is overall very effective for this genre.

As can perhaps be expected from a standalone graphic novel of short length, the plot is on the lighter side and our hero does benefit from plot armor at places. If you are looking for novel innovative world building or a deep intricate plot, this would likely not be the book for you.

Having said that, if you have enjoyed the Dresden files, Constantine or Witcher and are craving more of similar fast-paced action, you are precisely the kind of the person this is written for.

“Slamming a head into a stone wall will knock out even the strongest guy.”

I’d be eagerly looking forward to what is next in store for Crowley.
